Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has been one of the most exciting breakthroughs in AI. By dynamically retrieving in relevant information from external sources and incorporating it into the generation process of LLMs, RAG helps produce outputs that are not only more accurate but also timely and grounded in context.

When RAG first appeared, it was built on simple keyword-based retrieval. But things have come a long way. Today’s RAG architectures are far more advanced—modular, adaptive, and capable of drawing from diverse data sources. Some can even decide how to retrieve based on the question at hand.

I’ve covered RAG from various angles before (AI Exploration Journey: RAG), mostly focusing on architecture, implementation, or use cases. But one thing I haven’t really explored in depth is how the paradigm itself has evolved—from a simple enhancement to a foundational design principle for next-gen AI systems.
